This workshop will provide an introduction to the general philosophy and history of the Open Frameworks C++ programming environment which has been designed similar to the popular Processing environment for the simplified creation of interactive installations and artworks. OF is an open source project led by Zach Lieberman, Theo Watson and Arturo Castro and is also driven by a growing community of artists and designers who are regularly contributing the usable results of their own works back into the general framework.

Workshop Description:

[img_assist|nid=1050|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=250|height=188] In this workshop, we will construct textile sensors and circuitry from conductive fabrics and thread, with ordinary textile materials such as poppers, fabrics and yarns. Instead of soldering and wiring, we will saw, iron and knit these sensors and circuits.

[img_assist|nid=1051|title=|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=250|height=188] At our workshop will combine simple linux programming with the of making a fanzine.

Day 1
participants are asked to bring image material and experiment with simple bash/python code that we bring along in order to have an easy experimental introduction to generative image manipulation. We are going to share prepared basic linux/python code that we prepared for the participants to do some image processing.

PD/GEM
GEM stands for Graphics Environment for Multimedia and is an external (plugin) for the computer-music software Pure Data (PD)

GEM is now maintained at the IEM by IOhannes m zmölnig. Future developments will be aimed at Linux, OS-X and Win32 platforms.

GEM is open source software, it is free for any use and can be downloaded from the internet. GEM runs on LINUX, OSX, Win32 and IRIX platforms.

GEM follows the programming paradigm of PD.

We will have about 8 PC-stations running with PD/Gem.

Mitbringen:
- Digicam preferable a camera supported by either gphoto2

This workshop will introduce participants to the world of VGA signals. Using microcontrollers it is possible to generate such signals with the very simple and cheap PIC microchip.

The microcontroller will be programmed using PIC assembly language, however, assembly coding skills are not required, as pre-programmed chips will be available. However, participants do need some soldering skills. The more adventorous can even use the prepared microcontroller to hook it up to an arduino or I2C chip, so that the VGA signal can be modified using a more powerful computer.
