Free and open-source software is becoming increasingly important for artists and designers, not only because of the popularity of free licenses and web technologies. The Networked Media Master's program at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam has relied entirely on free and open-source software for several years now, both on servers and PCs.

levelHead: Free Art in a corporate theatre

levelHead uses a hand-held solid-plastic cube as its only interface. On-screen, it appears each face of the cube contains a little room, each of which is logically connected by doors.
In one of these rooms is a character. By tilting the cube, the player directs this character from room to room in an effort to find the exit.

Are you addicted to or at least fascinated by maps, in print or online? I am, but for a long time I never thought it possible to create my own map. But since the dramatic growth of the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project and the associated software tools, this opened up a whole world of possibilities. There is already some variety of different general and thematic maps available on the web, and some of these will be shortly introduced here. Then, several techniques, data sources and software tools useful for creation of similar maps are presented.
