How can we protect our websites from data scraping by tech giants? Will AI crawlers erase the internet? How can we make the web a safer space for expressions? 'Greetings to AI Crawlers’ is a workshop exploring tactics and toolkits to deal with unwanted agents that abuse information on our web servers, making a lot of traffic. It invites everyone who is interested in the questions: how do we make the web safer, while keeping it DIY and personal, and how do we generate a (poetic) response to the machine.
The workshop is composed of two parts. The first part is an introduction to the concepts of bot and user agent in the web context. Nami Kim, admin of HTML Zine Club, will also introduce an HTML encrypting tool, as well as a few basic technical setups that a web server can communicate with bots. In the second part Michal Klodner, as a system admin of servus.at, will take you to play with Sarracenia, a software countermeasure against web scrapers serving endless and literary web content to trap scrapers and re-route them away as a mode to talk to those who don't listen to robots.txt. Participants will experiment with the tools by creating a random website, a template for a webpage generator, or training a text model in groups. Come by and explore!
