Barcode DJs

Barcode DJs is an AV performance played on pieces of trash with barcodes, as a symbol of the identification of goods of consumerism and waste production.

Barcode DJs makes you think about trash and waste in different ways. When considering the word trash, we can mean classic garbage, or bullshit coming out of mainstream culture. Here we think about both meanings in parallel.

Every package of any product found in supermarkets around the globe carries a barcode for identification at the cash desk. These ID's are barcodes, connecting the word trash with the word capitalism. Each barcode is unique, so each product can have a different individuality. Barcode DJs use these individualities to control custom-made software based on an open source software model.

We use scanners, which are used by markets right now, and open software highlighting independence and freedom.

We point out trash overload, a problem of the whole world. We use terms like recycling, reusing, trash handling, junkyards, sustainability to point out one of the important global problems: Trash!
